I enjoyed the film - it was technically very well done, great production values, and I think Rachel Goslins did all she could with the material she shot. But ultimately the material lacked a compelling reason to watch. (Spoiler Alert!) There was no "triumph against the odds" story. There may have been an interesting angle (which she tried to bring in) about "fighting the machine", but here too we lack any antagonist pov to make it interesting. We're left with a bright, attractive girl who wants to be homecoming queen, tries really hard, and fails. I realize docs aren't narrative features, but the best docs get lucky in that they capture some real life drama in the making. This one didn't get lucky. |
